Cat NGOs outraged at Transnet’s extermination policy
Transnet's decision follows a directive issued on February 14 - stating that stray animals are prohibited on Transnet properties

Cats of Durban, an NGO organisation, were outraged to find that Transnet Engineering SA has adopted a policy of cat extermination on its properties across the country.
The NGO is committed to looking after the well-being of the stray and feral cats in Durban.
According to a press release issued by Cats of Durban on Monday, Transnet’s decision follows a directive issued on February 14 – stating that stray animals are prohibited on Transnet properties.
The NGO claimed the prohibition included properties where Cats of Durban had already successfully been managing the feral cat populations.
“Cats of Durban spent months of time and donor money to sterilise the cats on the Transnet Engineering property in Edwin Swales Drive.
“The colony was in the process of being managed in order to prevent the identified problems.
“This directive means that hundreds of hours of volunteer time, and thousands of rands in donor funding, has been wasted,” said Cats of Durban’s, Niki Moore.
Ballito’s Feline Feral Fund founder Sharron Cossey warned that Transet would be setting themselves up for trouble if they followed through with the directive to remove cats off their property.
“There would be an increase in rats and rodents on the properties. They should have a controlled colony of sterilised cats.”
