Outcry over fencing across promenade

The promenade has been a feature of Ballito for nearly 20 years

La Montagne timeshare resort on the Ballito beachfront is busy erecting a fence that will cut off access to the promenade – a move that has infuriated locals.

The fence will run the length of La Montagne’s property and, though the wire has not been installed yet, appears to cut off all access to the promenade in front of the resort.

The hundreds of walkers and joggers who use the scenic promenade will be forced down to the beach, before joining the walkway again on the other side.

Locals walking along the promenade on Monday morning said they were very disappointed at La Montagne’s decision.

There isn’t really any room to extend the promenade around the new fence at La Montagne.

Many locals are outraged that the promenade may no longer be accessible and have been posting their comments on The Courier’s Facebook page.

Ballito local Fred Mills said, “I am bitterly disappointing in everyone involved in this – especially in La Montagne.”

Many people were also upset about the displacement of the feral cats that had made the embankment their home.
Rumours have been doing the rounds that there may be a pair of gates built into the fences that would only be locked at night – but this has yet to be confirmed.

The Courier wanted to ask La Montagne if this was the case and if increasing security was the motivation behind the fence, however general manager Simon Bailey said that they had no comment at this time.

The KDM communications department said that plans for the erection of the fence were not approved by the municipality and that a meeting would be held on Wednesday, March 8 with La Montagne management.

The promenade has been a feature of Ballito for nearly 20 years.

Some rumours have indicated that a pair of gates will be built on either side of the property and that they will only be closed at night.
