A dose of good health for Etete

As a non-profit, non-governmental, Hindu based organisation, their work is done through volunteering time and expertise with private funding

Etete got a dose of good health care recently when the Ramakrishna Clinic of SA Durban paid them a visit and set up a specialised medical camp.

The Ramakrishna Clinic holds an annual volunteer medical camp every year to fulfill their mission statement: “for one’s own salvation and for the welfare of the world”.

Under the Presidency of Swami Sumanasananda Maharaj, the clinic has been providing medical services since 1959 to indigent and deserving communities.

As a non-profit, non-governmental, Hindu based organisation, their work is done through volunteering time and expertise with private funding – mainly from devotees of the centre, and treats all people irrespective of faith or colour.

The medical clinic was held at the Radha Roopsingh School in conjunction with the Etete Subcentre of the Ramakrishna Centre of SA Durban.

Paediatrcs, general medicine, ENT, gynaecology, general surgery, dentistry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work/counseling, dietetics and optometry services were provided to people who could otherwise not afford the treatment.

The Ramakrishna Clinic of SA Durban set up a specialised medical clinic in Etete recently where a wide range of medical services were offered free of charge.

Additionally, patients were assessed for spectacles, free medication was dispensed at the pharmacy and laboratory testing done. Pap smear screening and HIV screening was also carried out with the assistance of the the Primary Health Care Clinic in the area.

A remarkable number of 491 patients were treated in a short space of seven hours. The spirit of service was tangible as volunteers were seen to be inspired in this Hindu philosophy of “sewa,” or “service which is performed without any expectation of result or reward for performing it”.

Despite an early start to the day and the weather being precarious, the volunteers were able to make an impact on the lives of those people from the community of Etete who do not have easy access to healthcare.
