Salt Rock drivers brought to book

The stop sign on Ocean Drive at the corner of Dolphin Crescent is often ignored by drivers

KwaDukuza municipality traffic officers have fined 57 drivers for R1 500 each for not stopping at a stop street in Salt Rock.

The stop sign on Ocean Drive at the corner of Dolphin Crescent is often ignored by drivers and has become problematic for some residents, especially those driving down Dolphin Crescent.

While many have welcomed the policing, others have taken to local WhatsApp groups complaining that the traffic officers should be stationed at busier, more dangerous places.

However, ward 22 Salt Rock councillor Malcolm Hubner said the suburb’s internal road was becoming troublesome.

“I have received letters from residents complaining about this matter. People driving through Ocean Drive do not stop and if someone is coming down from Dolphin Crescent, it could cause an accident.

“One person was already run over recently.

“People living in Dolphin Crescent cannot get out of their drive ways and dogs are regularly being run over on that road. People who do not abide by the rules need to be taught a lesson.”

KwaDukuza municipality knowledge and communications officer Sphelelo Ngobese said traffic officers have been monitoring Ocean Drive and Dolphin Crescent since November last year after they received numerous complaints from Hubner and residents.

“The largest amount of fines that were issued was on March 8 where 31 people were fined in a two and a half hour time frame.”
