Two teens killed by lightning

The storms had devastating effects at Ndwedwe especially

Two teenages were killed in the widespread thunderstorms in Ndwedwe and Maphumulo that wrecked havoc across the rural community.

According to the Ilembe disaster risk manager, Sifiso Ngubane the storms had devastating effects at Ndwedwe especially.

“The incidents in Ndwedwe were associated with rainfall, strong winds and lightning with upsetting effects in ward 18 in Thafamasi. The unfortunate incident occurred in the Shangase household and resulted in two fatalities and five injuries,” he said.

Five injured family members were transported to the nearby Ndwedwe Clinic and were discharged on the same day.

“The deceased were Sibani Shangase (14) and Muzikayise Mngadi (18). One of the deceased’s was a friend from the neighbourhood who was visiting the Shangase family,” said Ngubane.

Four lighting incidents were reported in the Maphumulo area, but luckily no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed thus far.

Ilembe district partnered with Ndwedwe local municipality in assessing the extent of damage caused by the recent storms and to find ways to assist the affected families.

“Based on the assessments it was evident that immediate short term interventions were required in the form of emergency relief aid.

“Four blankets and two food parcels were issued to assist both families,” said Ngubane.

He said both the Shangase and Mngadi families would need assistance towards the burial of their loved ones. Ndwedwe local municipality has made a commitment to contribute towards the funeral arrangements.

“As a district, we have partnered with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) to install lightning conductors in both the Shangase and Mngadi households. The district will make an effort to ensure that lightning conductors are installed before the dates of both funerals,” said Ngubane.
