Poverty is a mindset, hunger is a reality
The organisation has six committee members and desperately need donations to keep their organisation running
Noticing that a large number of people who are on chronic medication were not taking their medicine, Nkobongo resident Thandi Mthiyane started a support organisation to provide food for about 100 needy people and children from poor families.
“It came to my attention that most of the people were defaulting not because they forget to take their medication, but because they did not have food at home, therefore they could not take medication on an empty stomach,” said Mthiyane.
She felt that she had to do something to help. So she started the Umusa Kamanase Community Support Organisation, which has run a feeding scheme every Tuesday and Thursday since November 2015.
Mthiyane said her organisation also pays a home visit to those residents who cannot walk.
“We check if they have collected their medication and are taking it correctly. Unfortunately, we can only provide food two days a week. However, if we can get a sponsor we would provide food every day,” she said.
It is not only people on chronic medication who benefit from this initiative. When The Courier recently visited them, there were about 30 children who were there for food.
Mthiyane said they cook chicken, vegetables, beef curry with rice or samp. They have been doing this from their own pockets.
The organisation has six committee members and Mthiyane said they desperately need donations to keep their organisation running.
“I appreciate the help we get from Umusa Kamanase as some of us cannot afford to buy food daily,” said Anna Msomi from Shayamoya.
