Sanitary pads for rural schoolgirls
DAWN have embarked on a campaign to provide sanitary pads to thousands of girls in rural areas
For most women, walking into a pharmacy or supermarket to buy a pack of sanitary pads is a mundane task that they have never given much thought to.
More than seven million South African girls in rural areas do not have this luxury.
In a project that is being rolled out across KZN, the DA Women’s Network (DAWN) is hoping to make a difference in the daily lives of these girls.
DAWN have embarked on a campaign to provide sanitary pads to thousands of girls in rural areas.
“We do not truly realise just how privileged we are,” DAWN’s Privi Naidoo told The Courier.
“Something as seemingly small as access to sanitary pads has an impact on a girl’s life that simply cannot be quantified. It is estimated that these girls may miss up to 25 per cent of their school year as they are unable to attend school during menstruation, due to a lack of sanitary hygiene products.
“Research has shown that the girls use items such a rags, newspapers, leaves and even tree bark,” said Naidoo.
“This poses a basic hygiene risk and increases their risk of contracting infections.”
The campaign aims to instill a sense of dignity into the lives of our future leaders. DAWN have partnered with Umhlali SAPS locally, who will be assisting with the distributions.
By donating a single pack of sanitary pads, you are helping keep a girl in school for another month.
If you would like to support this initiative, drop off points are at the Homezone offices at 25 Sandra Road in Ballito or you contact warrant officer Vinny Pillay at 032 947 9900 or Stuart Weston at 082 360 8997 for collection.
Only donations of sanitary products will be accepted, no cash.
