Councillor Report Back – Tommy Du Toit
The areas in Ward 21 range from very wealthy to dirt poor
Being a councillor for ward 21 has had its ups and downs for the past few months.
Ward 21 is split into three areas: areas south of Ballito Drive, Driefontein and Sinqobeli in Upper Tongaat.
The areas range from very wealthy to dirt poor.
There has been some positive, mainly the news that at long last the work on the new taxi rank behind Shell Garage has begun.
All street lights are now working in the Townsend Park area.
The stair case from Minerva down to Sandra Road that was washed away about three years ago will be repaired and a contractor has been appointed. I am also pleased that on the other side of my ward, the Driefontein water reservoir construction is on track.
However, further up, a farmer has not been paid for the land sold by KDM used for the roads leading into Driefontein and this has been outstanding for seven years. I have taken this up with KDM and I am hoping to get answers in the near future.
The owner of Pick n Pay Ballito, Michael Lafferty, donated R5 000 worth of food to a day care facility in Driefontein and I would like to thank him for his generosity.
I have had some drama with my ward committee and I am sad to report that it is not yet running smoothly.
The committee consists of people from all three of my areas and there has been too much political interference from people from a certain area not wanting to work with others.
It is important to note the ward committee is not a political committee and that our role is not to follow a political agenda or serve a party but to serve the community as a whole.
I am hoping that all things will be sorted in the near future.
There have also been many reports of littering on the beach front. I have contacted KDM about this and they informed me that they will be policing the beaches until 10am although littering and public consumption of alcohol seems to happen late at night. They will be keeping an eye on it.
