Pedestrian hit on Ballito Drive
The stretch of Ballito Drive between the Lifestyle Centre and the Ballito Junction has long been problematic for pedestrians and motorists.
Shortly after 10am this morning a pedestrian crossing Ballito Drive between the Lifestyle Centre and the Ballito Junction was struck by a car.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst a woman in her late twenties tried to run across the road and was hit by a silver Hyundai.
“She sustained massive head trauma and was treated for her critical injuries alongside the road by advanced life support paramedics.”
Herbst said she was taken to Stanger Hospital.
The stretch of Ballito Drive between the Lifestyle Centre and the Ballito Junction has been problematic for many years.
Pedestrians crossing the road have to dodge traffic as there is no pedestrian crossing, a problem aggravated by the fact that motorists tend to treat the six lane road as a race track – speeding from one robot to the next.
Locals have been saying for a long time that a pedestrian bridge or tunnel is needed to prevent exactly these kinds of accidents from happening, and the expansion of the Junction into a regional mall will only make this need more dire.
Representatives of both the Junction and the Lifestyle Centre told The Courier that at this time there are no solid plans to erect a bridge or tunnel for pedestrians.
