Motorists to be fined for buying from Umvoti toll hawkers

The sale of puppies sparked a furor of complaints

Motorists who stop at the Umvoti toll on the N2 to buy from hawkers will soon be charged and fined.

The hawkers do not use the designated shelter provided but instead crowd around the cars at the toll booths.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said an urgent meeting was held yesterday between the South African National Road Agency (SANRAL) and various law enforcement agencies, after numerous reports of puppies being sold at the toll.

“Despite security being at the toll, the hawkers refuse to go away.

“They continue to sell items because people buy.

“The only way that we can get rid of them is by ensuring that people do not buy anything sold at the Umvoti toll. The toll will now be closely monitored.”

“The pink building next to the toll that the hawkers use for shelter will also be demolished.”

Pillay said the new measures will be put in place before Easter.

Many of the hawkers live near the plaza in the Thembeni area and rely on their sales to make a living.
