Opportunist criminals expected over Easter

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Manisha Mari said the police will be in high visibility mode during the long weekend

Umhlali and Tongaat SAPS are getting ready to tackle what they think could be an influx of crime over the long Easter weekend.

Criminals are known to take advantage of holidaymakers who are often more lax with security then when at home.

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Manisha Mari said the police will be in high visibility mode during the long weekend.

Although there will be roadblocks, stop and searches, high visibility patrols and foot patrols, the community is encouraged to do their part in ensuring safety:

Be vigilent with security

Especially when on holiday remember to activate your alarm and do not leave valuables within easy reach of open windows.

Do not drink and drive

If you are drinking, make sure that you have a sober driver or hire a cab.

Plan your visits to the beach

If you are visiting the beach, swim at demarcated areas that are patrolled by lifeguards. Do not let your children out of your sight.

Be careful when using the ATM

Refrain from counting cash in public. If someone comes into your ATM cubical, immediately cancel the transaction and do not leave without your card.

Leave the jewelry at home

Do not wear expensive jewelry when going into busy towns like Tongaat central or Stanger.

Do not be distracted

People walking around on their cellphones become an easy target for theft.

If you have to use your cellphone, rather go into a safe place like a restaurant.

Woman should be more careful

It may sound old fashioned but woman should refrain from walking alone at night or going into liquor outlets. These are where most cases of rape are reported.

“A case of kidnapping and rape was recently opened after a woman got into an unknown man’s car at Tongaat central. He took her into the bushes and raped her.

“The woman managed to escape and ran onto the road in Umdloti. Her money and cellphone were left in her abductor’s car,” said Mari.
