A journey to remember – celebrating 60 years
Like all good journeys, theirs has so far been filled with all the love, joy, family, sorrow, friendship and adventure that weaves a rich and entertaining story
Vic and Sylvia Coward began a shared journey on April 6, 1957 which recently reached the most incredible milestone – 60 years ‘on the road’!
Like all good journeys, theirs has so far been filled with all the love, joy, family, sorrow, friendship and adventure that weaves a rich and entertaining story.
Having both been born in the decade preceding WWII and marrying a decade after it ended, their early years were not always easy.
But the late 50’s offered plenty of incredible music, film and literature to keep one smiling. Pat Boone, Nat King Cole and Harry Belafonte were among those heading the music charts in 1957 while Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse Rock really set the boat rocking!
Vic and Sylvia started a family in 1959, having four children who gave them seven grandchildren.
Despite being spread across the globe in Cape Town, Johannesburg and England, their daughter, Shelley Birnie said they are a very close knit family.
“Regular family gatherings are magical times of laughter, games, music and memories,” said Birnie.
Sadly, their first born son Glenn died in a plane crash in 2008 along with his wife and two sons.
After spending most of their lives in Johannesburg and a further six years in Bloemfontein with their late son, Vic and Sylvia came to settle on the Dolphin Coast near their son-in-law Gary, Shelley and their two boys Dean and Brett.
Home is in Forest Village, Brettenwood, where they have lived for almost nine years and where the wonderful ‘Foresters’ have become an extended family, enriching their lives greatly with fun, care and friendship.
Sylvia continues a lifelong passion for art by painting and sketching while Vic enjoys reading.
