N2 Maphumulo bus crash kills 15

The bus was coming from Bulwer to Maphumulo, Emadlakathi area (Ward 1) for a traditional ceremony

Fifteen died after a bus with an ND registration overturned at Ntunjambili, Wosi area in Maphumulo on Saturday morning.

According to KZN emergency medical services spokesperson Robert McKenzie, the bus was carrying 27 people.

“The paramedics found the bus lying on its side, with 12 people having sustained fatal injuries. Paramedics treated a total of 15 patients. Eight patients were in a critical condition, while the remaining seven were seriously injured,” said Mckenzie.

Three people later died at the hospital.

Maphumulo municipality mayor Matozi Dlamini, said the bus was coming from Bulwer to Maphumulo, Emadlakathi area (Ward 1) for a traditional ceremony.

“Brake failure was the cause of the accident. Inspectors checked the bus and they said the bus was in a good condition. The only thing they believe could have resulted in the accident was the brakes and the driver was not familiar with the road,” said Dlamini.

Unconfirmed reports said the driver who was driving the bus at the time of the accident was not the original driver. The original driver was a passenger at the time of the accident, as he reportedly had allowed his friend to drive on his behalf. It is not clear whether his friend had a drivers license or not because he failed to produce it.
