Tackling drug abuse on the streets

Over one hundred people took part in the march

Drug and substance abuse is one of the major problems faced by Ilembe district municipality.

This was made clear as the streets of KwaDukuza were brought to a standstill during the drug and substance abuse march held by Ilembe District Municipality and the social welfare department on Wednesday.

Marchers walked from SADTU Park to the KwaDukuza Taxi Rank.

At the taxi rank, a former drug addict, Syeza Majola(31), who was addicted to whoonga for seven years, said the biggest problem facing former addicts is being discriminated by their communities.

“We deserve a second chance and it would be great to see the government offering skills development to ensure that we have something to do, so that we can start over,” said Majola.

Addicts were encouraged to not be afraid to ask for help.

Residents were also urged to work with the police and report drug dealers in their communities.
