Naked man allegedly sexually assaults beachgoers at Ballito
Attempting to escape custody the man jumped out of a window of the lifeguard tower onto the cement, injuring his ankle in the process
In a break from their normal duties, lifeguards at Thompson’s Bay had to apprehend a naked man inside the ladies bathrooms last week.
KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu told The Courier that at around 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon a man snuck into the women’s bathrooms at Thompson’s Bay and promptly stripped naked before trying to force his way into one of the stalls.
“When the woman in the stall started screaming in fright, the man jumped over the wall into a neighbouring stall and allegedly began sexually assaulting the young woman in the second stall,” Xulu said.
Bystanders heard the frantic screams from inside the bathroom and, thinking it was likely just children messing around, went in to investigate. When they entered the toilets though, they apparently saw the naked man forcefully groping the terrified woman.
“They rushed out and called to the lifeguards on duty for help.
“The lifeguards went into the toilets and caught the man, taking him up to the top of the lifeguard tower and locking him in.”
The man was not to be so easily deterred though, as the next thing lifeguards knew he had jumped out of the window from the very top of the tower onto the cement, injuring his ankle in the process.
“The guy tried to escape by running into the surf.
“Lifeguards followed him into the water and dragged him back before again locking him in the tower – and this time they made sure he could not escape.”
Xulu expressed his gratitude to IPSS Security and Alpha Security for their swift response as well as to the SAPS who took the man into custody.
