Heavy weather to close Dolphin Coast beaches

A large swell and strong winds have led to the closure of many beaches this weekend.

The stormy weather moving in on KZN is not only going to freeze up the mountains, beaches along the KZN coastline will be closed to swimmers from this evening (Thursday) for the weekend.

KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu told The Courier that heavy weather moving in from the southwest had lead to the decision to close many beaches.

“Along the Dolphin Coast Zinkwazi, Blythedale, Thompson’s Bay, Willards, Westbrook and Umdloti wil be closed,” said Xulu.

“The only one of our beaches that will be open to bathers over the weekend will be Salt Rock beach.”

The strong south-westerly system is expected to arrive tonight and cause strong winds and a large groundswell over the weekend.

“We expect the beaches to be closed for three to four days, opening again early next week.”

Xulu said that rough seas could damage the shark nets and as a result the KZN Shark’s Board had removed them at numerous beaches.

“We urge beachgoers to respect the closures for their own safety and to listen to the instructions of lifeguards at all times.”
