Miss Ballito finalist hosts successful beach clean-up

The day was organised by Miss Ballito finalist Bianca de Sousa as part of her community project

Red and white Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA banners brightened up Salt Rock beach on Sunday, as people with full black bags gathered after a morning beach clean-up.

The day was organised by Miss Ballito finalist Bianca de Sousa as part of her community project.

“The day has been great and I am thrilled that we all picked up so much litter. I found it surprising to find so many wine and beer glasses on the beach. We also cleaned up the overflowing bins,” said De Sousa, who is the head of Learn to Swim at the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation SA and has been sponsored by them during her Miss Ballito time.

The Foundation’s project manager Dominique Donner Rodd also joined in the clean-up and was shocked at how much they picked up.

“There were so many cigarette butts as well as bottle caps, sucker sticks and fishing line. The metal bottle caps are the worst, because they are so dangerous for the children,” said Donner Rodd.

Joining the environmental enthusiasts were a group of WESA beach stewards who are part of a 28-month-long ocean awareness project which started in October last year.

“We work towards creating environmental education and awareness to get people involved in getting Blue Flag status for the Dolphin Coast beaches,” said Khanyisani Sikhakhane, who is one of the enthusiastic beach stewards.

Once everyone returned with their full bags of litter, a mock drowning and CPR demonstration was done by the KwaDukuza lifeguards as part of the swim safety education on the day.
