UPDATE: Vivian Reddy sues KwaDukuza citizens group
Reddy has accused the CCG of stalling the development of his planned KwaDukuza new mall and recreation centre
Multimillionaire property mogul Vivian Reddy is coming out with guns blazing in a R28 million damages claim against a group of KwaDukuza residents known as the Concerned Citizen’s Group (CCG).
Reddy has accused the CCG of stalling the development of his planned KwaDukuza new mall and recreation centre.
Since Reddy’s company Edison Property was awarded the tender in 2014 to develop the KwaDukuza mall and recreation centre, the CCG had put forward objections alleging the tender process was conducted unfairly, claiming that Reddy is using the development as a cover up for a casino and saying the town would lose valuable sporting facilities.
About a month ago, the Durban High Court dismissed the CCG’s application for the construction of the mall to be halted. Reddy then announced that he planned to sue the group for R10 million which has since increased to R28 million.
Reddy pledged that whatever damages he is awarded, would be donated to charities in the Ilembe district.
“For almost a year, a local group of ‘objectors’ led by Haroon Mahomedy, have placed every obstructionist obstacle in the way of this much-needed development that will eventually turn out to be the lifeblood of a town that has been in limbo for decades. This has resulted in escalated costs running into millions of rands apart from the impact of time delays to the project and the severe commensurate cost of price increases on the development.”
Reddy said the CCG’s actions had a direct impact on delaying employment, municipal contributions and local economic upliftment.
However, CCG chairperson Haroon Mahomedy said they would not take Reddy’s threats lying down.
“We will very vigorously defend any legal action that is taken against us. As far as the CCG are concerned, our objections against the KwaDukuza mall development is far from over.”
Construction work on the development has already started.
