Mixed feelings about new Winter Fair venue

President of the KwaDukuza Child Welfare has appealed to the community to embrace the change

The annual KwaDukuza Winter Fair that previously took place at the recreation grounds, is moving to the Stanger High School sports grounds.

The recreation grounds are no longer available as they have been earmarked for a new mall and civil centre.

The new site for the fair has caused mixed feelings among people living near the school, and some are complaining about not being consulted about the move. They are unhappy about the likely noise disturbance and traffic.

The Courier spoke to eight residents and only two were happy about the Winter Fair taking place at the school’s ground.

“It is a charity event, so I do not see a problem with it. I can tolerate the noise and traffic for few days,” said resident Nigel David.

However, Nkanyiso Gumede who is also a member of the Stanger High School governing body said they are nonplussed.

“This had been shoved down our throats because no one had spoken with us about this. The governing body of the school did not even know about it,” said Gumede.

President of the KwaDukuza Child Welfare, Sandeep Oudram, said they had a meeting with the school principal in February.

“We got permission from KwaDukuza municipality. There is a 99-year lease agreement between KDM and the department of works. So we had to speak with KDM to get permission to use the ground, not the school,” said Oudram.

He said they are very sympathetic with the residents and they appeal to the community to embrace the change.

“It is a fact, they will be disturbed and we are asking them to be sympathetic with us. This is one of the fundraising events for the KwaDukuza Welfare.”

The fair will run from Thursday, June 29 until July 2, but Oudram said the school will not be disturbed on the Thursday and Friday.

“We will be hosting the Edu-fair on the first two days, which consists of educational shows for the schools. On Thursday, we will focus on primary schools and secondary schools on Friday,” said Oudram.
