UPDATE: KwaDukuza water supply issues to be resolved this week

Mechanical problems and not a lack of payment were the source of the problem

The recent water shortages experienced throughout KwaDukuza are a result of operational challenges experienced at both the Umvoti and Hazelmere waterworks from Monday, May 15.

According to Ilembe district municipality mayor Siduduzo Gumede, two raw water pumps failed and this resulted in only eight million litres being supplied per day instead of 14 million litres.

“A raw water pump was purchased and replaced but failed as a result of high siltation,” said Gumede.

“The pump worked only for nine hours on Wednesday, 17 May.”

On the same day, failure was experienced at Avondale pump station.

This pump station supplies water from Hazelmere Waterworks to Ballito and then to KwaDukuza Central Business District and surrounding areas.

“To ensure that there is water supply, while new pumps are being sourced, we will increase flow from Hazelmere system to the CBD and surrounding areas.”

It must be noted that with technical problems such as these, it normally takes two to three days for the system to recover.

Water supply should return to normal by this Friday, May 26.

Outstanding debt rumors

Umgeni Water has also confirmed that messages circulating on social media alleging that water supply shortages are linked to an outstanding debt owed by Ilembe district municipality, are not true.
