Calls for Ballito trauma centre
At present the land is owned by the department of Public Works
The possibility of putting the old Ballito police satellight station to use as a trauma centre for victims of abuse was discussed at a Ballito Neighbourhood Watch meeting last week.
The former station is in Karyn Road and has been in a state of extreme disrepair for many years.
Chairman Gary Frances said there had been great interest in putting it to good use.
“It would be amazing if we could create a safe, neutral space where – particularly – women and children could take shelter.”
Frances said that this was definitely still in the “idea phase” but that they were keen on following it up and making it a reality. At present the land is owned by the department of Public Works.
In 2014 The Courier reported on the state of the premises and since then the prefab buildings have been removed but no further work has been done. The property is slowly but surely being overgrown and provides an unwelcome place for vagrants or criminals to shelter in the middle of the residential area.
Frances said there had been an exceptionally good turnout at the meeting and that it was a sign that people are beginning to take crime seriously in Ballito.
“We had a good discussion covering several topics, including two great guest speakers in Barry Brown and Paul Fourie,” said Frances.
Brown and Fourie discussed new techniques in video surveillance and security as well as a new initiative to register day labourers and the like to enable prospective employers to identify who they are picking up and hold them accountable.
