SRU makes plea for donations to feed Knysna firefighters

A team from Ballito's Specialised Rescue Unit (SRU) travelled to Knysna yesterday, only to find that the food they collected was not nearly enough

While more than 800 firefighters risk their lives to put out the blistering fires around Knysna, Ballito’s rescue team has reported that they may soon run out of food for the unsung heroes.

A team from Specialised Rescue Unit (SRU) travelled to Knysna yesterday, only to find that the food they collected and transported would soon run out.

The SRU team are making quick meals, every half an hour, for the firefighters in order to keep up their energy levels.

Mo-Zam-Bik restauranteur and SRU member Brett Michielin said the SRU team’s focus was to ensure the firefighters were well taken care of.

“The firefighters are working 24-hours non-stop and they need food to keep up their energy levels.

“We try to feed them about once every half an hour.

“We are giving them hot dogs, burgers and fruit but the food is quickly running out.”

The devasting fires that have consumed parts of Knysna and surrounding areas forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

Four firefighters have reportedly lost their lives.

Michielin said the fires had been flaring up and down due to continuous heavy winds.

“There was a bit of rain but not enough to put out the fires,” he said.

Michielin asked that people open their hearts to donate money to buy enough food to keep the firefighters going for the next two days.

They have raised about R12 000 so far and need at least R8000 more.

Donations can be deposited by EFT into SRU’s account:

Bank: Absa Ballito 632 005

Account number: 9266963685
