UPDATE: Generosity rescues SPCA charity shop

Anderson turned to The Courier for help after the usual steady stream of donations had all but dried up

The SPCA charity shop in Ballito had one of their best weeks ever last week.

“It was better than Christmas!” said elated shop volunteer Maggie Anderson.

The huge turn around for The Dog Box was a direct result of an appeal for help on The North Coast Courier’s website and Facebook page the week before.

“We were blown away by the community’s response. A huge variety of secondhand goods were donated and they are flying off the shelves,” she said.

Anderson turned to The Courier for help after the usual steady stream of donations had all but dried up.

“There was hardly any money coming in and we desperately needed to turn it around.”

The Dolphin Coast SPCA relies heavily on the income generated and in 2016 the store raised over R1 million for the animals in their care.

She thanked everyone who emptied their closets and asked the public to continue to keep them front of mind.

“Please keep giving, your generosity goes a long way and we need your continual support.”

The Dog Box is situated on Jack Powell Road in the Boulevard Centre. The store stocks every kind of second-hand goods, from clothes and bric a brac to books, glassware, jewellery, crockery and small furniture items.

The staff are all unpaid volunteers and the profits are used by the Dolphin Coast SPCA in the care of lost, injured, abused, unwanted and abandoned animals.

The shop is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 12.30pm. No cash is kept on the premises.
