ANCYL set to picket against Ballito Junction

"When we stage our mass protest, we plan on bringing together more than 8 000 people."

The ANC Youth League hope to gather up to 1000 members to picket outside the Ballito Junction Regional mall this Thursday.

The demonstration comes about two months after the league voiced their anger at the Junction’s response to their memorandum which was handed to the mall management during mass protest action on March 23.

Thousands of ANCYL members forcefully entered the Ballito Junction property during a mass protest on March 23, causing about half a million rand worth of damage.

The protest action took place after the league accused the mall of not providing jobs for unemployed KwaDukuza youth.

In their response, the Ballito Junction mall told the league that they cannot force their tenants to hire locals but that they will facilitate education and mentorship programmes for the youth.

However, league regional secretary Musa Zondi rejected the mall’s response and accused management of “wasting their precious time”.

They vowed to stage continuous mass protest action at the Junction without warning on the busiest days of the month.

Zondi said the picket was a smaller version of what is still to come.

“This is only a picket, not a protest.

“When we stage our mass protest, we plan on bringing together more than 8 000 people.”

The league’s picket is set to take place from 9am to 5pm on the P445 close to McDonald’s, opposite the Ballito Junction Mall.

Umhlali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay said KDM members, local security, public order police and Umhlali SAPS will be on duty.

“We will ensure safety for all residents but we do not expect there to be any problems.”
