UPDATE: School alarm at KDM plans

No meetings had been held nor formal request received for use of the grounds

The Stanger High governing body is calling foul on the apparent unauthorised use of adjoining land to replace the town’s recreational ground given up to house the new civic centre and mall being built by developer Vivian Reddy.

The municipality announced last week that it was negotiating with the Department of Public Works, which owns the land, to develop a regional sporting complex on the school’s sports fields.

Governing body chairman Rev SM Nyawo denied this week that there had been meetings with the municipality for use of what they regard as their land. It is earmarked for educational purposes and is being maintained by the school.

“We would like to categorically state that, we, the school governing body of Stanger High School, would like to distance ourselves from recent media reports linking us as SGB to meetings with KwaDukuza municipality with regards to the proposed development of the school’s sports grounds as well as that of Stanger Winter Fair being held there.

“We are not against plans to develop the school’s sports fields, nor availing them for community activities, but we request proper protocols to be observed.”

No meetings had been held nor formal request received for use of the grounds.

“We note with concern that some activity has already started taking place there without the SGB’s consent. As far as we are concerned we still reserve the right to the property in question and we would like to exercise it,” said Rev Nyawo.
