Apartheid Guns and Money – a tale of profit

Author Hennie van Vuuren and a small team of researchers set out five years ago to unpack the wheeling and dealings behind economic crime in the apartheid era

Shining a light on well kept apartheid corruption secrets, Apartheid Guns and Money – a tale of profit, is a 600 page non-fiction book providing insight into the dark dealings of government and the prevalent issue of corruption.

Author Hennie van Vuuren and a small team of researchers from Cape Town set out five years ago to unpack the wheeling and dealings behind economic crime in the apartheid era.

The book that gains information from spies, declassified documents, eyewitness accounts and other extensive research, uncovers the underhanded tactics behind the creation of defense weapons in support of sanctions.

It exposes the leaders and dealers that profited including political leaders, journalists, arms banks, arms manufacturers and middlemen.

During a launch at Exclusive Books in Ballito last week, Van Vuuran said this was not a quest to be an author but rather to piece together some of the country’s most important stories.

“The driving force behind writing the book was a nagging sense that no one could give us answers about sanctions in the apartheid era.

“We need to be informed, ask questions and hold political leaders accountable who benefited from the apartheid regime.

The book helps us see the patterns of behavior that continue today that were so prominent in the past.”

Also the coauthor of the book ‘The Devil in the Detail: How the Arms Deal Changed Everything’, the 43 year old has been involved in the researching and exposing economic crimes for the past 20 years, highlighting that the right to information is a constitutional right that should not be ignored or misunderstood.

“The right to information about the state and their dealings is not something leaders can decide on. We need to exercise those rights as this gives us the tools to stand up against injustice and corruption.”
