Dog mauls 70-year-old man’s face in Tongaat

The severity of the man's injuries mean he is now fighting for his life

An elderly man’s face was virtually mauled off by his friend’s dog in Tongaat at around 11am this morning.

The man in his 70’s, who paramedics described as small and frail, is fighting for his life in hospital after he was brutally attacked by the dog while visiting his friend at Saunders Circle.

Netcare 911 media liaison Chris Botha said it was like something out of a horror movie.

“We arrived to see that the man’s face had been ripped apart.

“The dog had dragged the man to the ground by the arm and then continued to rip the flesh off the man’s face before devouring it.

“There were bite marks on both of his arms but the serious damage was to his face.”

Botha said the man was taken to a specialised hospital for treatment.

“He is in a critical condition and is on a ventilator.

“The damage was massive and he would have to undergo reconstructive surgery.”

Botha said the dog that looked like it was crossed with a boerboel, had been restrained by its owner when paramedics arrived.

Tongaat SAPS was unable to confirm if the dog had been put down.
