Elders make their voices heard

Many elderly people endure ill-treatment either by their family or community members

About 40 Shakaskraal senior citizens took to the streets last week in a protest against the abuse of the old and vulnerable members of society.

The demonstration organised by the Shakaskraal Association for the Age (SAFTA) last Wednesday, sent out a clear message – the elders will no longer tolerate disrespect.

SAFTA is a long standing Shakaskraal organisation that provides two meals a day and entertainment for about 135 elderly people.

According to vice chairperson Pastor Gerald Chetty, many elderly people endure ill-treatment either by their family or community members.

“We find some of these people are treated badly and drained financially by their own children or other close family members. Another recurring problem they face is with local clinics.

“Some of these people who are on chronic medication said they did not receive their tablets for as long as three months. They receive no help from clinic staff. These issues go unnoticed because of the lack of publicity and awareness.”

Umhlali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay said the rights of elderly people are too often neglected.

“It is sad for an old person to suffer in any way. We want people to know that it is not okay to abuse the vulnerable people in our community.”
