One step closer to a successful future
"I am often turned away from jobs because of my disability"
Despite having lost a leg at the age of 15, Vusi Shusha of Nkobongo township is determined to make a success of his life and provide for his family.
The 37-year-old man’s leg was amputated after a freak accident almost 22 years ago.
After trying tirelessly to find employment and make ends meet, Shusha sought the help of KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu, whose leg was also amputated after a hit and run accident when he was 17.
The two are now working together to find employment opportunities.
Although he is currently employed as a security guard, Shusha, a father of three, said he earned very little and is often turned away from jobs because of his disability.
While relaying the story of the life-changing event that led to him losing a leg, the pain and trauma of the memory were evident on his face.
“I grew up on a farm in Upper Tongaat. My friends and I were cutting a tree down in 1995 when we realized it had been cut in the wrong direction and it fell on my leg.”
Because of the extensive damage, doctors amputated Shusha’s left leg just above the knee.
After spending four months in hospital and another three months recovering at home, Shusha was forced to change schools and fell victim to bullying. Despite the teasing and the continued pain caused by a complication during the amputation, he passed his Matric.
“When they amputated my leg, they put in place a steel pin that was supposed to stay in my leg for only a month. Except my family and I were not told that it had to be removed and I had it in my thigh for about 11 years. It caused great pain when it moved.
“I would lie in bed, unable to get up for weeks until it was bearable. I missed many days at school and a lot of important exams. I only had it taken out two years ago.”
Shusha had a prosthetic leg fitted in 1996 which made life a bit easier.
KDM’s Bongani Xulu said he was touched by Shusha’s sheer determination.
“He contacted me on Facebook and his story touched me. He just needed guidance and thought I could help because I had been in a similar situation.
“I believe he is a hard working guy. He does not want hand-me-downs and he is doing things for himself. So far I have met with the Nkobongo councillor to tell him about the situation.”
Shusha who has experience as farm laborer and as a security guard is looking for employment opportunities. He can be contacted on 082 4866 807.
