WATCH: Ski boat capsized at Tinley Manor Beach
After losing one of their motors, three fishermen were flipped by a wave while returning to the beach.
Three fishermen were lucky to escape with their lives after their boat capsized on the way back to Tinley Manor Beach this afternoon.
According to KDM lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu the three men went out earlier Today (Wednesday) on a boat that had two 30cc motors.
“While they were out fishing one of the motors failed,” he said.
“When they came back into the beach they only had the one working motor and, while circling to find the right moment to beach, they were flipped by a wave.”
Fortunately none of the fishermen were hurt when the boat capsized and they managed to swim back to shore. The boat however, washed up onto the rocks.
“Luckily, my team and I were on our way back from a meeting in Stanger when we got the call and we rushed to the beach,” said Xulu.
The KDM lifeguard team arrived at Tinley Manor Beach and assessed the three men before alerting other services and making efforts to secure the boat.
In the end it took the combined efforts of KDM lifeguards, IPSS Medical Rescue, the Fire Department and K9 Search and Rescue to try securing the boat.
However, IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst said that the boat still broke up on the rocks.
“Most of the boat and some equipment was recovered,” said Herbst.
“SAPS Search and Rescue will conduct a dive operation with lift bags to recover the motors. It is just lucky no one was injured.”
Meanwhile, Xulu stressed that ski boat clubs must frequently check that all members’ boats are seaworthy and meet all the registration requirements.
“We cannot police all the clubs, it is up to them to make sure that they are up to specifications” he said.
“If this doesn’t improve it is only a matter of time before we see a fatality.”
