Update: Nkobongo vs Umhlali Quarry
Public Order Police were called in yesterday should things escalate but after negotiations with police the protesters stood down peacefully - for now
The Nkobongo residents demanding they be considered for jobs at Umhlali Quarry have agreed to reopen the road over the weekend.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said Public Order Police were called in yesterday should things escalate but after negotiations the protest was resolved peacefully.
“The community agreed to stand down at about 5pm and reopen the road as the owner of Umhlali Quarry is away on business and will only be back on Monday to meet with them,” he said.
In the meantime the quarry has agreed to pay the medical bills of the man who was shot in the stomach during an altercation with a quarry security guard yesterday.
Umhlali Quarry’s Nicholas Shabalala said Goodman Nkoyeni (30) had been transferred to a private hospital.
“We will have a meeting on Monday with the community to discuss their complains but we cannot undermine the value of someone’s life.
“So his family have chosen a private hospital of their choice and we will pay,” said Shabalala.
This is the second protest outside the quarry in two weeks.
“The employment process will be put on hold until the quarry and the community have reached an agreement,” said Shabalala.
