MEC goes strawberry picking at Cappeny Estates

The sweet 'pick your own' farm is the first 100 per cent black owned, managed and operated strawberry farm

Government officials were completely taken a back by the Cappeny Estates Strawberry Farm on Esenembe Road during their first visit on Monday.

Under the theme “Together we move South Africa forward: Our Future – Make it work.”, the deputy minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries Bheki Cele along with the MEC of KZN department of agriculture and rural development Themba Mthembu visited the first farm owned by the humble power couple Yoliswa and Xolani Gumede who said that despite the hard work, opening the farm is a decision they do not regret.

The sweet ‘pick your own’ farm is the first 100 per cent black owned, managed and operated strawberry farm.

The purpose of the visit was to showcase the work of young farmers in line with the national youth 2020 policy which aims to support the establishment of youth owned and/or managed enterprises.

Cappeny Estates offers direct selling of fresh and frozen strawberries to retailers and the public.

It is 100% export certified and compliant with the Global and South African Good Agricultural Practice (GAP).

The farm is also a member of the international society of Horticultural Science as well as South African Strawberry Growers Association.
