Mysterious “angel” surfer saves woman, teenager and baby from drowning at Westbrook Beach
Later, one of the women described the surfer as “their angel who appeared out of nowhere and then disappeared when they were safe.”
An unknown surfer has been deemed “an angel” after rescuing a woman, a teenager and an eight-month-old baby from drowning at Westbrook Beach, Tongaat on Friday afternoon.
The surfer brought the victims safely to shore before disappearing.
Netcare 911 media liaison Nick Dollman said five females, including a baby and teenager, who were visiting the beach from out of town, were on the shoreline when they were knocked down and swept to sea by a large wave.
“Two adults made it back to shore but one adult, one 14-year-old girl and an eight-month-old baby were in trouble in the water.”
Dollman said bystanders witnessed the incident and quickly called for help when the unidentified surfer came to the rescue. Later, one of the women described the surfer as “their angel who appeared out of nowhere and then disappeared when they were safe.”
All five victims were taken to hospital for assessment and care by Netcare 911.
Dollman said the two women who managed to get out of the water on their own were treated for shock but were otherwise fine.
“The three other victims, including the 8-month-old baby was treated for drowning related symptoms.
“The 14-year-old was the most serious of the three”, he said.
