Ballito Taxi Rank is now open

Commuters will still have to wait for the completion of phase two (date still to be announced) for an overhead shelter from the elements

The long-awaited phase one of the R4.2 million Ballito Taxi Rank was officially opened this morning.

While taxis have been operating from the rank – located behind the Shell Garage, next to the Virgin Active gym on Ballito Drive – during construction since March, facilities such as toilets were only completed last week.

The entire rank has been surfaced and this has been met with much relief from commuters who previously had to struggle through mud on rainy days and breath in dust on windy days.

They will have to wait for the completion of phase two (date still to be announced) for an overhead shelter from the elements.

Dolphin Coast Taxi Association spokesperson, Sunshine Mthiyane said they are delighted they now have a proper taxi rank and promised to look after it.”We have set up a disciplinary committee that will ensure that everything is going well at the rank. We will ensure that vendors have a permit to operate and drug dealers keep clear of our rank,” said Mthiyane.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu thanked all stakeholders for the role they played in the negotiations to secure the land.

“It was a very difficult and challenging journey but I am happy that we finally managed to reach this point. I must also stress that the taxi association was very patient with us and I believe we had gained their trust,” said Mthembu.

In his acceptance speech last year, Mthembu made a commitment to unlocked three priority public transport facilities within the current term of office. He underlined the Ballito Taxi Rank, KwaDukuza Intermodal Facility and the Woodhead Public Transport Facility.
