Zinkwazi’s ‘Tubby’ the seal is given a new home
The seal was captured this morning (Friday) and released this afternoon by members of the SRU and uShaka Marine World
After spending three days resting on Zinkwazi beach, ‘Tubby’ the Elephant seal has been safely relocated to a secure and secluded beach (kept anonymous for the seal’s protection).
According to Specialised Rescue Unit’s (SRU) Quentin Power, after news spread of the female seal’s visit, more than 300 people flocked to the beach to get a closer look.
Unfortunately this scared Tubby off and she ultimately moved from the beach, past the lagoon and up into one of the nearby homes.

She was discovered in a resident’s garden yesterday afternoon, hiding behind a water tank.
The seal was captured this morning (Friday) and released this afternoon by members of the SRU and uShaka Marine World.
Native to Marion Island, visits to the KZN coast by Elephant seals are quite uncommon. According to uShaka Marine Word’s Anne Kunz there have been only 11 recorded visits in the last 40 years.
Marion Island is nearly half way to Antarctica from South Africa.
