WATCH: Driver makes lucky escape in train / car accident at Shaka’s Head
There have been at least four fatal accidents at the railway tracks in Groutville and Shaka's Head in the past month
Shortly before 6pm last night (Tuesday) a car crossing railway tracks was hit by a train near Shaka’s Head.
The car was crossing the tracks behind the Imbonini Business Park and was clipped on its rear end by a train coming from the Compensation Train Station.
Fortunately nobody was seriously hurt.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said there had been at least four fatal accidents at the railway tracks in Groutville and Shaka’s Head in the past month.
“We are thinking of putting in place an operation to charge people who are seen crossing the railway line but there are so many people and the situation is getting out of control.
“Railway accidents are starting to become a main cause of death on the North Coast and we are seriously concerned,” Pillay said.

Three men were lucky to escape with their lives last Wednesday after their car was hit by a train near the Charlottedale station. One of the men was trapped in the vehicle and had to be put on a ventilator after being freed, while the other two escaped with minor injuries.
Meanwhile the tracks near Fairbreeze are becoming notorious for accidents.
“About three weeks ago, a woman was killed while crossing the line.
“Sometimes people underestimate the train’s speed and take a chance,” said Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Patrick Ngwane.
Pillay urged people to be cautious when crossing train tracks.
“Trains are heavy and move fast and there is a lot of force behind it.
“A train driver cannot just dead break and come to a stop. People need to understand this.”
