Townsend park turfed up by motorists

Ward 22 councillor Malcolm Hubner said vandalizing the park was illegal

Living near a park should be a good thing for home owners, but public spaces need to be respected.

Ballito residents near Townsend Park are fed up with motorists arriving at the park during the night and tearing up the turf with ‘wheelies’ and ‘doughnuts’.

“The community have been trying so hard to improve this park and then these people just come and ruin it,” said Scott Farlam, who lives nearby.

Farlam has seen cars spinning wheels and destroying the turf and even a quad bike tearing up the grass.

“This is an ongoing problem – it never seems to be the same people so obviously there are a lot of people who think this is acceptable behaviour.”

Ward 22 councillor Malcolm Hubner said vandalizing the park was definitely illegal.

“If people want to drive a little way into the park and have a picnic nobody is going to mind, but they are certainly not allowed to behave like this.”

Hubner advised people to call their local councillors or contact the municipal control room at 032-437 5530.
