Tongaat Hulett brings joy to children
The day, hosted as part of their Mandela Day initiative, included talks on road safety, the dangers of alcohol and drugs, fire safety, cleanliness and refuse disposal
Educational talks, fun activities and a range of tasty treats made for a memorable occasion for 1000 Cornubia and Blackburn village children last week.
This was during the Mandela Day celebrations hosted by Tongaat Hulett Developments and eThekwini Municipality.
Honouring the late president and his profound love for children, the initiative welcomed the pupils between 5 and 13 years attending Solomon Mahlangu Primary School.
“Most of these children come from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds, with many of the families unable to afford the most basic of necessities,” explained Bongani Gumede, Tongaat Hulett Developments executive.
“Working with the city, we wanted to give these children a really worthwhile experience, a day filled with fun while also passing along vital messages that will keep them safe and informed.
“It was a very successful undertaking and we were grateful to have played some meaningful role in their lives.”
The day included talks on road safety, the dangers of alcohol and drugs, fire safety, cleanliness and refuse disposal.
Attending to the health of the children was a mobile clinic which assessed and treated children for various ailments throughout the morning. The rest of the day saw the children entertained by a visit from Coco the Clown with lots of fun had on the jumping castles. They were also treated to a number of snacks, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.
School principal Kevin Sevlall thanked to everyone for the initiative, stating that Mandela would have loved the delighted faces of the children enjoying the day.
“We are here to give you, the children, a better life,” said Sevlall.
“You must play your part and be disciplined and learn.”
