Schoolboy dies in horrific bakkie crash near Mandeni

Six children are critical and several others were injured

UPDATE

Owing to the severity of injuries and accessibility, the six critical patients were airlifted by the South African Airforce, while IPSS advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise the patients on board the aircraft.

Air Mercy Services were also in attendance and assisted with airlifting patients to Ngwelezane Hospital.


 

A 14-year-old boy has died after a fully loaded bakkie carrying 17 school children crashed between Mandeni and Eshowe this morning.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue‘s Paul Herbst, six children were in critical condition, while eight children sustained moderate injuries and a number of others sustained minor injuries.

The accident occurred on a rural road almost two hours away from the nearest hospital.

One of the critical patients was airlifted by Air Mercy Services to Ngwelezane Hospital.

A military helicopter has now been airborne to transport the five other critically injured patients to hospital, while paramedics monitor the remaining children at the clinic.
