Going back to their roots
"We noticed that in our community we lack knowledge about culture, we have lost our ways of living"
A group of young people in Shaka’s Head are determined to instill cultural pride into the youth of their township.
“We noticed that in our community we lack knowledge about culture, we have lost our ways of living,” said Philisiwe Masuku.
Philani Nene, Mandisa Khumalo, Mabongi Mthethwa, Nokwanda Phetha and Masuku have formed the African Cultural Forum with the aim of encouraging young people to embrace their culture and showcase their talents.
“Traditionally in the African culture, women used to be respected and protected but these days they are being killed and abused.
“We believe that if we get the youth to understand their culture and know the principles and rules of it, things can change and hopefully we can make Shaka’s Head a crime free township,” said Masuku.
They recently hosted their first mini event at the Shaka’s Head Community Hall. The event was a build to their main cultural event that will be held next month.
“During the event, we give artists a place to showcase their talent and introduce them to the public.
“We will also be hosting cultural classes to teach young girls about how a girl behaves and carry herself in public and the same will be done for the boys,” said Masuku.
They also plan to help get the kids off the streets.
In a long run, they want to have people that will be teaching children about beadwork and traditional attire.
Besides knowing how to make it, they want children to know the meanings behind it.
“We want to ensure that our children will grow up knowing that our culture and traditions are not only for the people in rural areas, but are for every African and need to be embraced,” said Masuku.
