Whale carcass washed ashore at Mtunzini
The carcass will most likely be left to decompose over time
Mtunzini residents made a grizzly discovery this week after an adult humpback whale carcass was found just north of the main beach on Wednesday.
Social media has been abuzz with rumours that the whale was attacked by sharks while giving birth and succumbed to its injuries, however KZN Sharks Board spokesperson Mike Anderson-Reade has confirmed that while they are uncertain what caused the whale’s death, this was not true.
“Due to its size, the carcass is very difficult to move, and because of where it is situated, it will most likely be left there for nature to take its course,” said Anderson-Reade.
The humpback whale is a migratory animal and whether from land or boats you can expect to have the most spectacular sightings every year from June – November.
This is during their annual migration from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to the warmer waters off Mozambique where they feed and breed.
Peak calving season, and therefore viewing season, is during July and August.
