Fingers on the trigger at Shakaskraal

An internal problem almost led to a crossfire in a public area with hundreds of people around

Dolphin Coast taxi bosses nearly caused a major incident at the Shakaskraal taxi rank last week in an apparent dispute with rank managers.

According to Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay, the internal problem almost led to a crossfire in a public area with hundreds of people around.

“We were called to Shakaskraal after reports of a fight that was about to take place. When we got there, the situation was tense and we feared that it would become volatile.

“There were about 30 taxi security guards on either side of the Shakaskraal main road walking with their guns out as though they were ready to shoot.

“Eventually, things returned to normal again but there are issues that could result in violence in the future if not sorted out.”

The association spokesperson Sunshine Mthiyane said there were a number of problems that were causing anger within the association, these included the hiring of conductors, duty lists and unregistered members operating within the association.

Mthiyane said the problems were resolved at a meeting last Friday and that the association did not expect any disruptions going forward.

“Taxi owners were angry about the duty lists that rank managers had drawn up. Some of the lists did not include certain taxis and the taxi owners were losing money.

“We resolved to set a new duty list. There was also the issue about the conductors who were all fired because they were accused of stealing money. We decided that some conductors would be hired if they are needed as not everyone needs a conductor.”

Mthiyane said that these issues were sometimes used as an excuse to fight and show power within the industry.
