TAKE NOTE: Whale activity closes three Dolphin Coast beaches

The large numbers of whales passing our coastline has resulted in the closure of three Dolphin Coast beaches this weekend.

According to KwaDukuza Lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu, Clarke Bay, Thompson’s Bay and Blythedale Beach will be closed to bathers.

The closures are being done to protect these majestic animals from becoming trapped in the shark nets.

“Two sets of net gear have already been damaged, but luckily no harm was done to the animals,” said Xulu.

He urges beach goers to obey instructions from lifeguards.

Whether from land or boats you can expect to have the most spectacular whale sightings every year from June through to November.

This is during their annual migration from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to the warmer waters off Mozambique where they feed and breed.

Strict rules protect the whales while they are in our waters and people are not allowed to approach within 300 meters of whales or dolphins.

The best way to enjoy whale watching up close is to go on a licensed whale-watching boat trip.

Registered charters are available from Durban harbour and St Lucia.
