WATCH: Gear up for a bass fishing bonanza!

It is almost time for the Seeff / Tongaat Hulett fishing fun day in support of the North Coast Courier Orphan Fund on September 25

There is a R5 000 fish lurking somewhere in Dudley Pringle Dam and you could be the lucky angler who hooks it.

That is right – it is time for the Seeff / Tongaat Hulett fishing fun day in support of the North Coast Courier Orphan Fund on September 25.

The event will run from 5.30am to 10am, with prize giving taking place at 10.30am whereafter entrants can continue to fish, braai or picnic with their families at the dam until 2pm.

Last Saturday The Courier‘s fishing fundi David Hoehler and local bass fishing aficionado, Jonni Wills, paid a visit to the dam to test the waters and catch and tag the magic bass.

“The dam is in pristine condition and we literally caught and released dozens of 1-2kg bass during the morning,” said Hoehler.

He said the tagged bass was about 1,5kg and was released safely back into the dam, swimming away strongly.

Jonni also had some excellent “inside information” for would-be anglers.

“The bass are definitely in a post-spawn mode. The fish were ravenous, taking any fast moving or vibrating baits (spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits) thrown at them. A variety of dark plastic lures (lizards, flukes, stickbaits and frogs) also worked for the shoals of bass hanging on deep drop-offs.”

Like earlier this year, the event is not a fishing ‘competition’ and there will be no measuring and weighing of fish. Instead there will be loads of excellent lucky draw prizes up for grabs as well as prizes for pictures of fish caught posted on the North Coast Courier Facebook page.

A kids bass fishing clinic will also be held from 8am till 9am and a ‘biggest fish’ competition will be held from 9.30am till 10am, where fishermen have 30 minutes to hook the largest catch in a demarcated area.

You can enter at Hook Line and Sinker Ballito or Salt Rock or online.

Kick boats, paddle ski’s and small inflatable paddle boats are allowed, however no motorised boats or sneaker motors will be permitted. Dudley Pringle dam is private property and fishing is strictly prohibited except for September 25 for anglers that have entered the competition.

The cost for bank anglers is R100 and R150 for watercraft anglers – all proceeds will go towards the North Coast Courier Orphan Fund.

The Ballito Lions Club will sell food and drinks and Specialised Rescue will again be on hand to ensue general safety at the event.

So what are you waiting for? Space is limited and already filling up fast so book your spot now and make sure to bring a picnic basket along and enjoy the day with your family.
