Four retired teachers and volunteer assistants have come together to offer basic English adult literacy classes
Despite South Africans being able to speak in a number of languages, many adults are faced with the challenge of being unable to read or write.
Taking their plight into consideration, four retired teachers and volunteer assistants have come together to offer basic English adult literacy classes at the Umhlali Methodist church every Thursday afternoon.
One of the facilitators Sue Wills said most of the students are domestic workers who are sponsored by their employers.
“We have the classes once a week where they are given time off. Most of the students speak excellent English but they cannot read or write in either English or their vernacular language.”

Being illiterate impacts on everyday life as those affected are unable to fill in forms, understand medication instructions, read school reports or even communicate with simple SMS or Whatsapp messages, to list but a few situations.
The classes that started more than a year ago have so far successfully educated more than a dozen people. About seven people are currently enrolled full time in the program.
“The classes are accredited and are offered from beginner levels.
“Students remain able to work at their own pace until they are comfortable to sit for a formal examination where, upon passing, they would achieve an ABET certification.”
A nominal charge of R300 per level is required, which covers all course material, however, sponsorship is available for those unable to meet this cost.
