Sewage spill closes Salt Rock Beach

Salt Rock Beach has been closed this afternoon (Tuesday) due to sewage leaking into the stream that flows into the sea.

KDM Lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu confirmed the beach had been closed for hygiene reasons.

Sembcorp Siza staff were at the beach to repair the leak.

“It will not be open again today, but if Sembcorp complete their repairs then we hope the beach to be open as usual tomorrow,” Xulu told The Courier.

Sembcorp Siza technical manager Kobus Fourier said they were alerted to the leak by the local councillors and public this morning.

“Investigation showed it was the rising sewer main pipeline from Salt Rock sewer pump station,” said Fourie.

Repairs to the pipeline were completed by 3.30pm this afternoon.

“Our quality department will advise when the beach can be opened again after taking samples. As a precaution we always close the areas affected from the public and we extend our apologies to those affected today.”

Fourie said they would investigate the cause of the spill over the next week to determine what further actions is required.

“We also want to thank the public for alerting us quickly.”
