UPDATE: Salt Rock rabies victim found
The woman found the rabid puppy in her yard, trying to attack her dogs, when it bit her
The missing “holidaymaker” who was bitten by a rabid dog last week Thursday has been found and is in treatment.
Six positive rabies cases have been diagnosed on the Dolphin Coast, with a rabid puppy found running on Ocean Drive last week.
The Salt Rock resident, Michelle Phillips had been bitten on her hand by the rabid puppy, that had come into their yard and tried to attack their dogs.
Luckily, her daughter, Carrera Phillips insisted that she go have the bite wound checked out immediately.
“It was a small wound, but I had a bad feeling about it, because the puppy was so aggressive and it is just not worth taking a chance.
“My mom immediately went to Salt Rock Vet to tell them about the puppy and the bite wound,” said Carrera.
“She then went to Dr Lutchman straight away to start treatment and got her shots at Dischem.”
When news came out that the puppy had indeed tested positive for rabies, Michelle went to Netcare Alberlito Hopsital for further treatment.
“My mom’s doctor spoke to the rabies specialist from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to make sure all the correct medical procedures had been followed.
“Luckily, she has not shown any symptoms.”
Carrera said they had their two dogs checked out, but luckily their vaccinations were up to date and they are all in the clear.
