Family drown in their car at Maphumulo Dam

The whole family, including two small children, drowned in the dam.

A family of seven were plunged to their death when their Toyota Venture crashed into a large dam in a remote region of Maphumulo on the North Coast on Sunday afternoon.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while going downhill, hit the wall of the Imvutshane Dam, between Stanger and Greytown, and rolled into the water.

SAPS K9 Unit, SAPS Search and Rescue and IPSS Medical Rescue’s aquatic team found all seven family members dead in the water.

“The vehicle was found at a depth of about five metres with six of the family inside it, including two children – 10 months old and three years old.  The seventh person was ejected out of the car and found a couple of metres away from it in the dam,” said Paul Herbst of IPSS.
