Big dreams and an empty pocket
Delta Mbongo (73) is appealing for donations to complete her half built creche.
One of the first ladies to open a creche in Nkobongo, Delta Mbongo (73) is appealing for donations to complete her half built creche.
She had been using her old age grant money to build the Vukuzenzele Creche since 2005.
She started her creche in 1999 after she was retrenched from the factory she was working at in Verulam.
One of the women in the township asked Mbongo to look after her child while she was going to work and, through word of mouth, more and more people brought their children to her for care.
“I am afraid I might die before this building is completed. To fast track the construction, I thought it better to look for help.
“I will be so happy to finally see the children in this building,” said Mbongo.
Members of the African Gospel Church have volunteered to build the creche for her, free of charge, if she supplies the building materials.
When the building is completed she said she will allow the church to use the building for free as a sign of appreciation for their support.

“It has been a very difficult journey for me. Fortunately, I live alone, so sometimes I sacrifice food and spend all my money on the material, as long as there is tea in my house I can survive,” said Mbongo.
She said at some stage she had to borrow blocks from one of the residents to get the walls standing and to date, she had not paid them back.
Her creche is currently operating from the Nkobongo Community Hall. After deciding to spend more time in fundraising for the completion of the building. Mbongo had employed two caretakers to look after the children while she is out looking for funds.
“I had managed to get windows and doors for the building. I still need to fence the area, build toilets, paint it and get sand and cement,” said Mbongo.
To help Mbongo complete her dream building, you can call her on 073 984 5397 (she only speaks Zulu).
