Construction of Woodmead taxi rank on hold
The Courier recently visited the site and was told there had not been any work done for the past five months.
The construction of the overdue Woodmead taxi rank in Shakaskraal, just before the Sasko Bakery on the R102, has been put on hold.
This is believed to be due to financial problems experienced by TNL Property Development, the company awarded the tender to build the rank.
There were about 17 people originally employed, but 14 of them were dismissed.
The remaining workers have not been paid for the past three months, nor have some suppliers.
The Courier recently visited the site and was told there had not been any work done for the past five months.
Building equipment has been removed from site.
TNL Property is the second company to be awarded the tender to build the rank, but there has been no explanation as to why the first company lost the contract.
“It is very difficult for us as workers because we keep coming to work and we are not getting paid,” said Pinky Gida from Shayamoya.
Foreman Clive Urquhart said he had to get a loan to at least give the workers money for food and rent.
“Our boss keeps on telling us that he will pay us when the municipality pays him,” said Urquhart.
He said the due date was last year October and the site is in danger of being vandalised.
“A generator, lights, and steel had been recently stolen and I am afraid that more things will get stolen.”
KwaDukuza municipality and TNL Property Development have not responded to the questions sent to them.
